“You have no food,” Drum declared after peering into her refrigerator and inspecting her cupboards in search of breakfast. “I need to stop at home and get changed for work. Why don’t you come with me, and we can grab something to eat before going into work together?”

“I have no food because I eat later, and besides, I wasn’t expecting company,” she answered without telling an outright lie. “You’re welcome to head home and get fed and dressed in your own time. I’m heading into work now.”

“Now? But it’s way too early. You don’t start for another hour at least.”

“I know, but it takes me that long by bus and walking. Besides, I can’t afford to be late, or I’ll end up with a written warning.”

Drum straightened and closed the fridge door. He looked at her, not quite sure he’d heard her correctly.

“Say what? A written warning?”

“Apparently. I was warned when I arrived late and Jennifer had been looking for me to give me one of the new uniforms. She wasn’t impressed.”

“You don’t answer to her,” he said with anger rising. “Gil is the floor manager in the tire bay, and if he has a gripe with you, then he takes it to her. We have protocols regarding disciplinary measures.”

Cin shrugged as if it didn’t matter, but as far as he was concerned it absolutely did. First the nonpayment of Cin’s wages, then a censure over something pretty much everyone did at least a couple of times a year for one reason or another. Add to that the mean remark at the Friday-night drinks, and he was seeing a theme between Jennifer Green and Cin. One he did not like the sound of.

Sure, Jennifer was a little prickly at work, but she was good at her job and kept HR running like a well-oiled machine, but the way she was treating Cin was something else. Either way, the behavior was not an accepted part of Keyes work culture.

“You’re not taking me to work. It’s bad enough I let you stay last night. Maybe I should just ride the bike in, now I have it.”

“Don’t be silly. One lesson isn’t enough.”

“Then, I’ll walk and bus it, like I always do.”

Drum stared at her. Dressed in her Keyes Tires uniform and safety shoes, she was a far cry from the woman he’d made love with through the night. He had yet to work out how he felt about what they’d shared together. Even looking at her now ignited a fire in his blood. He wanted nothing more than to strip off that uniform and take her back upstairs. In her room they’d been in a cocoon of only the two of them. No one and nothing else had intruded. But as soon as they’d woken this morning, he’d sensed her withdrawal, her regrets. He walked over to her and tipped her chin up with his hand before kissing her deeply.

“Cin, about last night,” he started when he finally raised his head.

“Last night shouldn’t have happened, Drum.
